May 8, 2010: Friends of STAND, hosted by STAND, Inc. Board of Directors & The Advisory Board The evening reception was held about one mile from the administrative offices of STAND, Inc., at their newly renovated Training Center, also located on Covington Highway. A great location, with great food and drink provided by Caterriffics! With a diverse mix from both the non-profit and the private sector, the evening allowed guests and board members an opportunity to network, meet with STAND, Inc.’s leadership, and most importantly, to learn more about the organization’s programs and services. Led by Board Chair, Quency Powell, board introductions were made, and the purpose of the evening was conveyed. Mr. Powell gave a brief overview of the history of STAND, Inc., including a bio of its founder, Executive Director, Charles Sperling. Mr. Sperling in turn, introduced key staff that was present, including newly appointed Deputy Director, Michael Banner. As he applauded the guests for their attendance and provided a presentation of the state of STAND, Inc., Mr. Sperling also introduced a former client and present staff member, Anthony Rivers, who shared personal insight into his journey of recovery and the added value of the STAND, Inc. programming to his life. Mr. Rivers was transparent in providing the guest with an image of his transition from incarceration and a life of dysfunction, to his present station as a STAND, Inc. employee and further, to his present activities in community volunteer work as he continues to give back – “I came from under the bridge…” One of the highlights of the evening was a visit from Commissioner Larry Johnson and his wife, Dr. Tanisha Johnson. He reminded those in attendance of their moral obligation of supporting the more vulnerable populations and he again spoke of the services that STAND Inc. provides to the community that have been a positive vehicle for change with limited resources and financial support. The Commissioner then led the call for community buy-in by presenting the first monetary contribution of the evening! Before the evening ended, Charles Sperling recognized community partners present and gave “real life” examples of how funding is used and the results of having these services and programs available to the community. Light jazz, accompanied by delectable hors d'oeuvres, began the evening and ended the evening – a successful 1st event for Friends of STAND.
